The tester is responsible for:

setting up and executing the test
evaluating test execution
recovering from errors

Staffing

The knowledge and skill sets may vary depending on the types of tests being executed and the stages of test. Senior level skills are needed to execute tests, such as performance tests or tests during the integration stage. Junior level skills may be required when executing function tests or tests during the system test stage.

The following skill and knowledge sets apply to the tester role:

Senior tester:

knowledge of the system or application being tested
knowledge of networking and system architecture
knowledge of testing and test automation tools
diagnostic and problem solving skills
programming skills are required

Junior tester:

knowledge of the system or application being tested
knowledge of testing and test automation tools
diagnostic and problem solving skills
programming skills are desirable
