Tool Mentors > Rational ClearCase Tool Mentors > Creating a Development Workspace Using Rational ClearCase

Purpose

This tool mentor describes how to create a private workspace for individual work. A "private workspace" is isolated from the workspaces of other team members. It provides a place for a developer to make changes to the system without seeing or affecting other developers' changes.

Overview

In the UCM model of ClearCase, private workspaces are called development workspaces and allow work on UCM activities to be isolated from the rest of  the project. Generally, each project member creates their own development work area at the time they join a UCM project. Private work areas can also be created at any time in the course of working on a UCM project.

UCM development workspaces are made up of a stream and an associated view. UCM streams determine which versions of elements appear in any view configured by that stream. Streams also maintain a list of  UCM baselines and activities. Views provide work areas for tasks such as editing and compiling source files, document formatting, and so on.

This tool mentor is applicable when running Microsoft Windows.

Tool Steps

Each developer uses an individual development stream for performing work in isolation from the rest of the team. Development views provide access to the source files and activities in your development stream. In the UCM model, development streams and views are typically created by a developer when joining a project through the Join Project Wizard. The general steps are:

  1. Start the Join Project Wizard
  2. Specify stream and view information
  3. Attach a view to a stream
See the Join Project Wizard topic in ClearCase online Help for additional information. For detailed information on UCM views and streams, see these topics in ClearCase online Help.

3. Attach a view to a stream To top of page

The Join Project Wizard prompts you to confirm the choices you have made and attaches the development view and stream you specified. Click OK to confirm your choices and proceed.

For more information on associating views and streams, see the To Attach a New View to an Existing Stream topic in ClearCase online Help
